Design-Wall Monday

I was at a fabulous retreat last week outside of Huntsville, Alabama.  You could probably hear the collective hum of 13 sewing machines and one set of knitting needles from wherever you live!

I’m waiting to show you a couple of quilt tops for UFO Thursday, but I do have a couple more projects to share today.  First is a baby quilt made from UFO scraps.

I had a lot of partial strip sets from that UFO.  I trimmed them to 4″ wide (the height of this tumbler template), and quickly cut out a bunch of tumblers.  I sewed them together kind of willy-nilly.  I have a wider blue border to put around this little baby quilt:

I saw these templates (scroll halfway down the linked page) at the Madison Quilt Expo, and I’m so glad I bought them.  I also bought the 8″ tumbler ruler, and I’m going to use that one to cut through a bunch of FQs that are in my “use up/get rid of/don’t want it any more” pile.

I also bought a Moda layer cake at an adorable quilt shop called Olive Juice in Onalaska, Wisconsin.  It was an impulse purchase, but the fabrics just called to me.  I didn’t know what to do with them until I saw Alice (at the retreat) working on a quilt called 10-Minute Blocks by Suzanne McNeill.  A mock-up of what a 17″ block will look like:

That’s it from me.  Check out other quilters’ progress at JudyL’s blog, Patchwork Times!

I’ve been away…

…for a week, but somehow it seems much longer.  I think it’s because we packed so MUCH into that week!

I actually wasn’t going to blog this weekend because everything I thought about, I wanted to save.  UFO progress at the retreat?  Nope, want to save it for Thursday’s Child post.  New projects I’m working on?  I want to save those for Monday’s Design Wall report.  So just to give you a taste of the fruits of our retreat labors (and we were a hard-working bunch), here’s a picture:

And I took a little walk behind the house today to check on the state of the wild flowers.  From the window, they look pretty dried up.  There are a few “late bloomers”, though, and they are pretty:

The bugs I saw today were kind of ooky looking, so I’m sparing you any close-ups.  You’re welcome.

That’s it for now.  Hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

Too Much Fun!

That’s what I’ve been having lately!  And all that fun has taken me away from home, which has meant an idle blog.  And guess what?  In 7 1/2 hours I’ll be on a flight to Huntsville, AL, so I guess the fun isn’t over yet.  Nooo, it’s just getting started.

Fun So Far:  There were two county fairs, the Minnesota State Fair, a Vikings game (okay, that was really DH’s fun, but it was fun going with him), two trips to Madison, WI, one to drop off a quilt and then another girls’ road trip to go back and see the show (it was FAB), and a girlfriend outing/overnight in Hinckley, MN.

Fun To Come:  Leaving for Huntsville, AL, tomorrow morning to spend some time with my Aunt Bert — and as a bonus, I get to go on a quilt retreat  with her quilting group!  My projects are cut and packed, and *yawn* it’s almost time to leave for the airport.

Some of my favorite pix from the State Fair for inspiration:

Topiary-style horse sculptures.

I love this quilt -- such sweet little shoe applique's.
And look at these cute hanky dresses!

I’m not sure what access I’ll have to computers/wi-fi, so you may not hear much from me in the next week.  I’m bringing a couple of UFOs to work on, so I’ll hopefully have some progress to report soon.  (I did make some UFO progress this week, but no pictures yet.)
