Need a Gift Idea?

I’ll confess right off the bat — I got this “recipe” from Judy Laquidara’s blog, Patchwork Times.  There are variations all over blogland, but here’s what I like:

Homemade Hand Cream #1

This makes a heavier cream, excellent for wintertime and WONDERFUL for your feet.

16 oz. baby lotion
8 oz. Vaseline
8 oz. Vitamin E Cream (can usually find at dollar stores)

Whip these three ingredients together with your electric mixer until well mixed.  Put into 1-cup wide-mouth canning jars (my new favorite way) or into travel-size plastic containers.

Tip:  To get the cream into small-necked containers, scoop the lotion into a large zipper-type bag and cut out a corner.  Roll the top of the bag down securely so it doesn’t open up on you when you’re squeezing the lotion out the corner opening.

Homemade Hand Cream #2

This makes a lighter-weight cream, still excellent.  The only difference is the amount of Vaseline.

16 oz. baby lotion
4 oz. Vaseline
8 oz. Vitamin E Cream

Whip these three ingredients together with your electric mixer until well mixed.  Put into 1-cup wide-mouth canning jars (my new favorite way) or into travel-size plastic containers.

And a REMINDER:  Click here if you haven’t entered my give-away.  (Comments must be on the original posting to be eligible to win the prize, so comments on this particular post are closed.)

Blog Hop Party!!!

Quilting Gallery is celebrating their 4th birthday by hosting a Blog Hop Party!  Lots of quilting bloggers (230 from over 20 countries) have signed up to join the celebration by having a give-away on their blog.  Thanks go to Michele from the Quilter’s Gallery for organizing this event.

A bit about me:  I’m a knitter and a quilter in beautiful (but slightly chilly) Minnesota.  I also enjoy photography — especially taking pictures of quilts, birds, and bugs!  (I know, it’s weird…I can’t stand bugs and bees but I love taking their pictures.)

This is my favorite picture I took last summer.  This bee is showing us how to enjoy all the best that life has to offer — just dive in head first!

The Give-Away:

As a quilter, I’m always on the lookout for a product that makes me a faster quilter.  Or a better quilter.  Or APPEAR to be a better quilter!

I know there are many, many methods for making half-square triangles and quarter-square triangles (hour-glass blocks).  In the past, my favorite method has been purchasing the paper rolls.  Using the paper makes your blocks truly square and the right size.  Construction is so much easier when your components are the right size and shape!  Sometimes I would run out of a size, or I would need a slightly “odd” size paper.

This past year I started using Triangulations software.

Triangulations™ allows you to print the size blocks you need, using your regular printer and regular printer paper.  I shorten my stitch length (as you would using any paper technique).  To remove the paper, I crease the paper on the stitching line and it easily rips off.  I’m sold!  I’ve especially enjoyed using the Triangulations™ when making my Farmer’s Wife Sampler blocks, as you can print the exact size you need in 1/16″ increments.

(If you haven’t used half-square triangle paper on a roll or sheets before, here’s a Triangulations™ demonstration on YouTube.)

To Enter: Leave a comment here  sharing what your current favorite fabric colors are. (I’ve been very drawn to brown and red quilts lately.)

The Fine Print:

My give-away will end Saturday, 12/17, at noon CST.  Sorry, I will not be mailing internationally.  Only one entry per person.  Winner will be determined by an on-line random number generator.

After you’ve left a comment for me, be sure to CLICK HERE to hop on over to Quilting Gallery (starting Saturday December 10) for the list of other participating bloggers.

Good luck, and thank you for stopping by!

Give-Away Alert!!!

I’m participating in the Quilting Gallery Blog Hop Party celebrating Quilting Gallery’s 4th anniversary. The give-aways will be revealed Friday, December 9th, and run through December 16th.

I’ve been mulling over my choice of item to give away, and I can tell you that it’s one of my favorite “tools”, something most of you don’t have, and it’s something any quilter could use.  It’s also smaller than a bread box, non-edible, and doesn’t require feeding!

On Friday, 12/9, the Blog Hop Party button on the right-hand side of this page should be active and direct you to other participating blogs — lots of chances to win lots of prizes!

And it just doesn’t seem right to have a blog post without pictures, so here’s a shot of a snowy egret, taken in Port Aransas, Texas, in October:

Stop by tomorrow for a new favorite squash soup recipe!

What time is it?

It must be time for a give-away! No good reason — just “because”!

I’ve mentioned that we had some interior painting done a couple of weeks ago.  Painting necessitated moving EVERYTHING in the kitchen/living room/dining room, and we have a lot of stuff.  The biggest challenge was the display of teapots I have above the kitchen cabinets.  I don’t know how many times I was up and down the ladder, but it was a lot!  Then the job of washing everything.  Followed by climbing up and down the ladder countless more times to put everything back.

But a couple of things happened that week:

1)  I counted my teapots.

2)  I decided I could spare one. It’s a brand-new Hues N Brews 40-ounce teapot (with infuser) that I forgot I had!  It’s been in the china cabinet, waiting for its very first Tea Party.  It’s pretty cool.  It has a basket for loose tea right inside the pot.  It has that mid-century look, and reminds me of Fiesta Ware, only in a pastel (if you want the orange one, you’ll have to get it yourself from Amazon!).

So the commenter who has the closest guess of “How Many Teapots Does Sue Have In Her Kitchen” will receive a gift basket including the above-pictured teapot and some other tea-related goodies, and of course some fabric.  (In case of a tie, I will go to a random number generator site to break the tie.)

Now, a few of you have been in my house.  I’ve never noticed anyone counting teapots.  Plus, they have not all been visible at one time.  Plus, it has been an expanding collection!

SO, to help level the playing field, here are a couple of pictures I had on my blog in the past showing a sampling:

and another…

So what time is it? For the person who has the closest guess, it’s TEA TIME!

Leave me a comment with your best guess of the number of teapots I have in my kitchen.  Comments will close at 12:00 CDT (noon) Friday, August 12, 2011.  One entry per person.  Good Luck!

(Your guess must be entered as a comment to this post to be eligible.)

Giveaway Results

First of all, a big THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by and took the time to enter.  It was a lot of fun to read the comments and see who was “in the neighborhood”!

I did the drawing this morning by www.random.org.  I set the parameters to 1 through 66 (inclusive), choosing three numbers lottery style (where numbers wouldn’t be repeated).  (And a side note:  the three numbers came up in numerical order.  I double and triple checked, and it is a coincidence that our winners are in ascending order.)

And, the winners are…

13, 22, and 62!!!  Oh, I guess you probably want names.  The winners (who have already been notified by e-mail) are…

First Prize:  #13, Freda Henderson — wins the template sets and a rotary cutter

Second Prize:  #22, Lori in SD — wins the Minnesota Moda charm pack

Third Prize:  #62, thepricklypinecone — wins the 8 x 10 Monarch Butterfly print

Congratulations to the winners!  And if you were one of the first 30 to comment, you win a shop-hop charm!  Please take a moment to click on the “contact me” button at the top of the page and send me your name and mailing address.  If I haven’t heard from you by Thursday, I will send individual e-mails.

Thank you, everyone!

Monday Design Wall

(a little quilt, a little nature, and a little give-away reminder)

QUILT: My latest completion is a strippy baby/toddler-sized quilt.

If you read Mary’s (Heartstrings) blog, I’m sure you’re thinking you’ve seen this quilt before — and you have!  Mary generously offers many free patterns on her blog, including this one (look about halfway down her list on the left — this one is “Quick Strippie”).

This is such a cute, easy, no-fabric-waste kind of pattern, I just couldn’t resist trying it out.  Then when I was looking for a juvenile print focus fabric, I saw the same cute monkeys that Mary used, so of course I knew that green and rust would perfectly complement the monkeys.  (what a copy-cat copy-monkey I am!)

I plan to make more of these quilts (I have a pink one with teddy bears sewn up, and fabric for one with puppies) so I can have some ready to wrap up in a big bow and gift to the new babies in our lives.  Well, I guess that isn’t on my design wall since it’s done, but I hadn’t shown it to you yet. This Quick Strippie pattern is great for those cute children’s novelty prints.  (It would also work great for a holiday/theme/seasonal quilt to throw over a banister or the back of a sofa.  Hmmm….)

Sewing plans for the week:

>  Finish my “quilt on a stick” for the Minnesota State Fair (I can show it to you next Monday)

> Do some catching up on my Farmer’s Wife Sampler blocks

>  My Aunt Bert will be here in a couple of days, and I have two fun patterns (a bag and flip-flops) in mind for us to work on together.  Doesn’t that sound like fun?  And we might need to visit a couple of my favorite shops.

NATURE: The heat has taken its toll on the wild flowers behind us.  This purple cone flower has seen better days, but I love how the purple is morphing into orange.

GIVE-AWAY: This is the last day for my give-away.  If you haven’t already entered, click on the Monarch Butterfly at the top of my site to go directly to the give-away post.  That is where your comment needs to be to count for the give-away.  Comments on that post will be closed tonight, Monday, August 16th, at midnight CST.

Have a great, productive week, and to inspire you, pop on over to Judy Laquidara’s blog to see what other quilters are up to.

Drunkard’s Path Curves & Give-away

The templates I’m giving way are by Elisa’s Backporch.  I have cut up 28 fat quarters using the combination of the 7″ template and the 3.5″ template.  Elisa includes a pattern with each of these templates (the 7″ template includes the pattern I’m using).  If you have both templates, you have very little waste out of your fat quarters — that’s why I decided to give both templates to one winner, along with the little rotary cutter.

Elisa has a great little video on her site showing two methods of sewing these curves.  One method uses only three pins (the method I used), and the other method uses NO pins!  Elisa says these templates are addicting and she is right.  I bought the 7″ one first, and the next day I drove the 10 miles or so to Quilt Cove to get the 3.5″!  Whoever wins these is going to love them.

So, to get to my give-away post, go to the upper right column of my site and click on the monarch butterfly.

Last-Minute Lucy (& give-away)

At least hat’s what my Mom SHOULD have named me! I’m working on an item for the Minnesota State Fair.  We have a fairly new category, a quilt on a stick!. It’s a little 8″ x 9″ quilt with a vertical sleeve on the back to accommodate a paint stick. I can’t show you this year’s yet, because the entry days go through next Wednesday, but I can tell you that this year’s theme is the Mosquito!  Here is my entry from last year (which totally underwhelmed the judges):

Last year’s theme was The Fair.  I liked my little black-faced sheep.  I even used a thin wool batting, and I named her Wool-ma.  (Makes me think of the time when my boys were in high school, and one of them told me, “Mom, you’re not nearly as funny as you think you are”.  Ouch!  Of course he was right, but it doesn’t matter because I keep myself amused!  In a few days I’ll share my mosquito quilt-on-a-stick with you (I know — you’re just itching to see it!)

If you haven’t entered my give-away yet, please go to the top of this page and click on the monarch butterfly button.  She will take you directly to the give-away post.

P.S.  Today my Dad would have been 82.  We always loved it when his birthday fell on Friday the 13th.  Happy Birthday, Dad.

Useless Information & a Give-Away

This week I’m celebrating hitting my 500th post.  (C’mon, it’s hot and humid — we need to have a little fun!)

So here’s some useless, but hopefully interesting, information about my blog.  In the admin part of my blog, the counter page keeps track of some data about my visitors.  This is a good time to tell you that, no, I can’t see who you are by just you visiting my site, but it does keep track of things like what people may have searched for to arrive at my blog.

After “Featherstone Quiltworks”, the next most searched-for term is “Fruit Ladies”.  This tells me that a lot of people bought this fabric because it is so fun (that’s why I bought it), but then what to do with it???  Here’s what I did with mine:

I made a picnic/beach “blanket”.  I had been collecting the various fruit fabrics, so it was just a matter of finding the wicker fabric.  If you haven’t seen the “Fruit Ladies”, here’s a close-up of the border print:

And the other half of celebrating is a give-away!  Click on the button below and Mona the Monarch will lead you to the give-away post.  One entry per person, please.

Thanks for stopping by, and good luck!
