Stash Report

Nothing bought this week (I’m feeling the glow under the weight of my halo), but nothing taken out of stash either (okay, there’s a little tarnish on the halo).  I’ve been busy working on UFOs.  Having finished CrazyMomQuilts‘ 9-patch quilt-along this week — well, the top is finished / the quilting awaits — and working on Judy L’s last Quilt For an Hour (QFAH) from last fall, I’m sewing, but no stash is being busted.

9PatchonRailingQuilts0009

  • Used this week:  0 yards
  • YTD:  159.25 yards used
  • Purchased this week:  0 yards
  • YTD:  164.5 yards purchased
  • YTD Net:  5.25 yards IN
  • And like everybody else, I just don’t have enough projects to work on, so I plan to jump in on Judy L’s next QFAH (which starts tomorrow).  This will be especially fun because my Aunt Bert, who just started quilting this summer, plans to do this one as well.  Hundreds of miles apart, and we can be quilting together!  How fun is that???

Well, time to go down into the stash and figure out what I can use to get started on Judy’s QFAH (I have a bucket of bright FQs I think I will tap into).  It really makes it a challenge, when you’re just working from stash.  Three other quilts I’ve made along with Judy, and they’ve turned out quite nicely, just using up some of that fabric that was waiting patiently on my shelves:

If you’re on the fence about joining in this next QFAH, hop off the fence and come on over to the fun side!  Judy’s quilts are great stash busters, and she’s so generous to offer a free pattern along with the encouragement to get it done.  I always tell myself I can find an hour a day for another project (as long as I don’t break a wrist like I did last November), and it’s fun to watch everyone’s projects develop along with your own.  C’mon along!!!

    A Sampler of Topics…

First off, it’s Judy Laquidara’s Stash-Busting Sunday.  I didn’t report last week, so this is two weeks’ worth of reporting.  Nothing bought (well, I bought four kits at the fair, but they were all for gifts, and they are all given away).  4.75 yards left my stash in my what-did-Sue-eat-at-the-State-Fair give-away.  I’ve been sewing sashing strips and borders together (how boring is that???), which is great progress on the UFO front, but I’m not using any additional fabric out of stash.

  • Used this week:  4.75 yards
  • YTD:  159.25 yards used
  • Purchased this week:  Zilch
  • YTD:  164.5 yards purchased
  • YTD Net:  5.25 yards IN  — I’m getting close to where I started 8 1/2 months ago!
  • And speaking of my give-away, one of the winners, Barbara, was inspired to start a blog!!!  Stop by to welcome her to blogland, and please say “hi”.  It’s always nice to know somebody visited you.

This leads me to something else I’ve been thinking about mentioning on my blog, it’s a couple of great ways to increase your visitor count, and that is to sign up for some of the quilt blog lists that are out there.  Some to check out:

They are a great resource if you’re looking for quilt blogs to visit, but they are also helpful ways to increase the exposure of your blog to other quilters.  On the Quilting Gallery site, you are able to search for quilt blogs by state (as well as search other ways), which is fun if you are specifically looking for blogs in your part of the world.

And lastly, this has been a great bird-watching week so I will include some bird photos that made me smile.  We seem to be having three different hummingbirds favoring us with feeder visits.  One is a male:

    091309Hummer

And this is the same guy perched on their favorite branch.  He looks chunkier in the tree.  His mama must have taught him to sit up straight at the “table”.

    091309HummerTree

This is one of the females.  (We know there are two, because one has even spots on her throat, “No-Spot”, and the other one has one bigger splotch that stands out, “Spot”.)  This one has really gotten bossy, and now sits in the tree and chases off any other hummingbird that tries to steal a sip of syrup.  This is definitely No-Spot’s tree.

And this bird made me scramble for the bird book.  I thought it was some sort of horned bird.  Turns out the juvenile house finches can have these tufts, and the morning sun was really highlighting them.  Pretty cool looking.091309HouseFinch

    Sunday’s Stash Report / Give-away

Stash Report:  Is it just me, or are these Sundays getting closer and closer together???  It’s been good for me to participate in Judy Laquidara’s stash reports on Sunday, even though I haven’t done as well as I would have liked.  It’s been an education for me to see what I actually use and buy, and (believe it or not) it does make me stop and think a little more before a purchase because I will have to account for it!

This week 1 yard is cut up for a small candle mat project to sew at a friend’s house on Friday.  3 yards are into six blocks for our guild’s BOM.  I have six blocks done, and I decided to finish up the remaining six this weekend and get it over with!

At the Minnesota State Fair this week, there were two quilt shops with booths.  I couldn’t quite escape without any purchases.  At The Sampler, I bought a small jelly roll of just purples (1 yard).  At Rosebud’s Cottage, I bought two candle mat kits, which I’m not going to declare in this report because they are both gifts.

  • Used this week:  4 yards
  • YTD:  154.5 yards used
  • Purchased this week:  1 yard
  • YTD:  164.5 yards purchased
  • YTD Net:  10 yards IN
  • Give-Away:  I’m in the middle of a give-away, which ends this Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. Minnesota time.  Click here for the silly details.

    Sunday’s Stash-Busting Report

Nothing bought this week.  I guess that helps offset some of my “negative winnings” at Las Vegas!

Sashing strips/border/binding for my Scrappy 9-Patch,  3 yards used.

  • Used this week:  3 yards
  • YTD:  150.5 yards used
  • Purchased this week:  Nada
  • YTD:  163.5 yards purchased
  • YTD Net:  13 yards IN
  • Isn’t it fun to finally receive a package you’ve been expecting?  It’s ten times more fun when you receive a package you WEREN’T expecting!

Lynda G. (a fabric winner in my 60,000th visit give-away) is from Maine, and she sent me a lovely gift assortment of Maine-related items!  What a fun surprise, Lynda, and I will think of you every time I use/see them (lobster fabric, a Maine pin, a Maine/moose tape measure, a Kennebunkport postcard, and a lovely note).  Thank you so much!!!  It was such a ray of sunshine in an otherwise cloudy couple of days.

    Dan&Kathy

(Pictured above:  Niece Summer & her husband Adam in the stream, Kathy & Dan on the bench with their nephew Alex.)  Our Nephew Dan from Seattle passed away this week (age 48), losing his hard-fought battle with kidney cancer.  We stayed with Dan and Kathy for a few days during our Seattle trip last summer, where they are relaxing above by the stream in their backyard.  They were such a special couple, and it’s hard to believe he’s gone.  If you’re a spiritual person, please say a little prayer for Kathy, who has truly lost her soul mate.

    Cathy

Also this month, we’ve lost Cathy, a member of Prior Lake Quilters as well as our Wednesday group, DayStitchers.  She is pictured here showing the block she made for Arlis’ birdhouse quilt.  Cathy was such a friend to us all, and she always had a cheerful word and a sunny disposition — gone now due to breast cancer.  It’s hard to accept that she won’t be at our Wednesday get-togethers any more.

They are both gone too soon, but both Dan and Cathy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

    Sunday’s Stash-Busting Report

Nothing purchased.  I repeat, NOTHING PURCHASED!  I think I should celebrate by making a little trip to the LQS!

Six yards went into the Fruit Ladies’ binding and backing. so finally, a week that I’m going towards my goal!

  • YTD 147.5 yards out (used)
  • YTD 163.5 yards in (purchased)
  • YTD Net:  16 yards IN
  • YTD Goal:  75 yards out
  • I could actually make my goal by year’s end if I didn’t buy any more fabric this year.  Yeah, I thought that was pretty funny too!

And I’ve been trying to think of a name for the beach/picnic quilt I just finished with the Fruit Ladies on it.  How about, Beach Blanket Bimbos?

    Stash-Busting Sunday

Check out Judy Laquidara’s blog for a look at how other quilters are doing on their stash busting for 2009.

Fabric In:  I ordered four fun FQs from Vicki Welsh’s Etsy shop.  They are sun prints, and I love them!    1 yard IN.

Fabric Out:  Last weekend (Saturday night, to be exact) I had a little surprise give-away for the first three people to leave a comment (plus any comments held for moderation before the third published comment).  I had one extra that was held for moderation, for a total of 4 surprise gifts.  (They are packed up and going out in the mail tomorrow to Lynda, Robin, Karen & Julie.)  3 yards OUT.

  • YTD 141.5 yards out (used)
  • YTD 163.5 yards in (purchased)
  • YTD Net:  22 yards IN
  • YTD Goal:  75 yards out
  • It’s pretty sad when you have to give fabric away to reduce that net number!  I will be making at least one new quilt back this week, so if I don’t buy anything I’l have a good reduction for next week!

    Sunday’s Stash-Busting Report

Today’s stash report covers the past two Sundays as well (vacation).  I was quite restrained in my shopping while on vacation, considering I visited five quilt shops in Alaska.  I purchased a small panel and a little yardage that had an Alaska theme totaling 3.5 yards.  I did see some black and red fabrics that were so beautiful, I nearly caved.  I only have a little bit of non-buyer’s regret, but I’ll get over it.  (As Pam B says, “They will still be making fabric tomorrow.)  Ooooh, and I did place a teensy, weensy, small, itty-bitty smidgen of an order at Vicki Welsh’s Etsy shop, but I will count that when it comes in (her work is so pretty).

On the usage end of the fabric bolt — nada.  I did some sewing this week, but mostly on an existing project.  I did make a small Santa ornament at Featherweight Club this week, but that took so little fabric — I have more threads clinging to my black pants than were in the fabric used…so…

  • YTD 138.5 yards out (used)
  • YTD 162.5 yards in (purchased)
  • YTD Net:  24 yards IN
  • YTD Goal:  75 yards out
  • – Sue

(and a little ps:  my late night/early morning surprise give-away winners are Floribunda, Karen J, Lynda G & Robin.

and a pps:  This past week I did a 7-day travelogue on this blog of our Alaskan cruise, so if you’d like to check out the sights in Alaska, it’s in my posts starting on July 27th and continuing through August 1st.)

    Stash-Busting Sunday

Notice I never give the week number?  When you’re retired, you can hardly keep track of the month, much less the week.

This week I worked on a UFO, Shine On Bayou Cane, by Judy Laquidara, as well as stitching up some more 9-patches for CrazyMomQuilts’ quilt-along.  No new fabric cut into.

It was a busy week that kept me out of the fabric stores (gasp), and so nothing had a chance to follow me home.  Nothing in/nothing out.

    Sunday’s Stash Report

(Check Judy L’s blog for other participants’ Stash Reports.)

    Nothing in

5 yards out for a backing for the Posh charm squares quilt; I finished the top months ago, and it’s time to get this baby quilted and gifted.  This quilt is part of my UFO Challenge.  I am determined to whittle away at my huge number of UFOs, and so my “out” numbers are going to be mostly backings for a while.  Oh, who am I kidding???  I’m sure to start something new once in a while.

I had a little impromptu give-away yesterday for a red, white, and/or blue fat quarter to the first three people to leave a comment.  The 3rd and 4th people left comments almost simultaneously, so I increased the give-away to the first four people.  Then I went to my sewing closet to dig out my patriotic fabrics.  I ran across a yummy piece of red-on-red Christmas fabric, which sounds way more fun to work with right now than fabric for a holiday that has just passed us by.  And it’s a little bigger print, so I upped it to 1/2 yard cuts each, and they will be in the mail tomorrow!  2 yards of red fabric out, so there’s my total of  7 yards out.

  • YTD 138.5 yards out
  • YTD 159.00 yards in
  • YTD Net:  20.5 yards IN   (booo!)
  • YTD Goal:  75 yards out

    Sunday’s Stash Report

What do you mean, it isn’t Sunday any more???  I’m playing catch-up, and thought I better confess post ‘cuz I was naughty stimulating the economy this week.

IN:  20 yards for an unplanned brainstorm quilt (that’s what happens when you go shopping with Pam B — “Oh, look at this fabric, you could do a wholecloth quilt for the Fair!”)  I never think of doing a wholecloth with a printed fabric, and of course this one was a gorgeous yellow and blue floral on white with a coordinating border stripe (Pam says that’s still a wholecloth, and I ALWAYS believe Pam), plus a little apple-green check for the binding and the backing, all cute as can be.  And with my coupons, got it for $2/yard.  Oh, you want to know the yardage?  20 yards in.

OUT:  This weekend at the family reunion, first-cousin-once-removed Kurt’s wife Sandy (who’s the only other quilter in this branch of the family) mentioned she had been asked to make a pink quilt for a breast cancer fundraiser, but was wishing she had some of the authentic fabric.  WELL!  I happen to have a kit, all authentic fabric, pretty as you please, includes backing and the pattern, sitting on a shelf.  Bought it from our LQS when it was the end of this fabric line’s run and they had it @ half price, and I thought I might want to do one in my spare time (yeah, right!).  It is now off the shelf and boxed up, on its way to Sandy!  8 yards out.

    So the downward spiral continues…

  • YTD 131.5 yards out
  • YTD 159.00 yards in
  • YTD Net:  27.5 yards IN   (booo!)
  • YTD Goal:  75 yards out (102.5 yards away from my goal, but who cares any more???)
  • Friday was our 38th anniversary (how could that be?  I’m not even that old), and since we had company during the week and I was gone all weekend, we’re going out for an early dinner tonight at a local steakhouse.  I better start getting ready.  I’m just glad I don’t have to report everything I eat during the week . . .
