Greeters
Date: 09/17/2007
As we headed north on the beach from the Sandcastle, we were greeted by a bevy of shore birds.
North View
Date: 09/17/2007
We walked north on Sunday, September 16, towards the south jetty in Port Aransas. It was a beautiful morning, and the humidity was down.
Happy Dog
Date: 09/17/2007
We've noticed a lot of pickup trucks and a lot of dogs in Texas. And a lot of dogs IN pickup trucks. This lucky dog was having a morning romp in the surf.
Fishers
Date: 09/17/2007
A lot of people "surf fish" down here. The water is normally very shallow, but this particular morning the tide was pretty far out, and you could walk a long ways out into the surf before getting up to your knees.
Bird Feeders
Date: 09/17/2007
All it takes is a handful of bread, and you'd have all the shore birds you could possibly want...
SCUBA Diver
Date: 09/17/2007
You don't often see SCUBA divers here, but this fellow was out for an early morning adventure.
South Jetty
Date: 09/17/2007
We finally made it to our destination: the South Jetty. It's about two miles from the Sandcastle, so it makes for a good walk.
Fishing at the Jetty
Date: 09/17/2007
The jetty is a very popular spot for fishing. Usually we will see a barge or large ship come through, but not this day. The ships come through this opening to get to Port Corpus Christi.
Cast Your Nets Into the Sea
Date: 09/17/2007
This is the first time we've seen net fishing on our walks.
Log
Date: 09/17/2007
It isn't unusual to see a log washed up on the shore, but this small log had large areas of barnacles. The barnacles were still alive, as when you would touch them, they would open up and you could see the fleshy part inside.
Surfer Babe
Date: 09/17/2007
This girl was being helped by someone in the water. She was trying valiantly, but to no avail. Hopefully she had better luck later in the morning.
Pier
Date: 09/17/2007
This is the Horace Caldwell Pier, about the half-way mark on our walk to and from the jetty.
Kites
Date: 09/17/2007
Another popular beach activity is kite flying. There is usually a pretty good breeze long the Gulf.
Clouds in the Sand
Date: 09/17/2007
Here you can see what a beautiful morning we had -- reflected in the wet sand.
Free Cooling
Date: 09/17/2007
The best way to stay cool at a hot Texas beach is to get your feet in the water! Aaaaah....
Sand Dunes
Date: 09/17/2007
Here is a good look at how substantial the dunes are between the Gulf and the buildings. Texas is very proactive in protecting the dunes from developers who would like to use some of this land. The dunes often block the view of the Gulf from lower floors, but they do offer some protection to us.
Home Sweet Home
Date: 09/17/2007
After fours miles of walking, we are back at the Sandcastle. You can see how far out the tide is. I am standing in water only to my ankles as I took this photo.
