Design Wall Monday

I know I’m not the only quilter who has caught the “Lucy Boston” bug.  Lucy was born in England in 1892, lived to be 98 years old, and was an author of children books.  Nowadays, she is known for her Patchwork of the Crosses.

This is English paper pieced, so this won’t be a fast project, but the English paper-piecing method makes for wonderful accuracy.  Some of the patches in the blocks will be fussy cut and some will be random, like the block above.

There are 24 pieces to the block, and the fun of making these blocks is deciding where you will put light and dark fabrics, as it changes the look of the block so much.

It’s nice to have a project involving handwork at the ready.  I am cutting more of the honeycomb pieces out and basting them to the papers, so I can have more fun putting my next block together.

There’s a lot of information on the internet about English paper piecing and The Patchwork of the Crosses made by Lucy Boston, so if you’re interested in trying it, it shouldn’t be hard to get started.

Sewing has taken a back seat this fall as we’ve been working on the house.  New carpet resulted in changing the furniture a bit, which resulted in a big empty wall.  Found this mirror that works out nicely.

  1. Beautiful block! I’m also making a POTC – I’m fussy cutting a red paisley for each of my blocks. I host a monthly hexie linky party (on the 17th) if you would care to join in next week…

  2. Beautiful calm colour scheme in this block with nice fussy cutting of the purple. I should imagine working on this is a form of meditation.

  3. Beautiful block and beautifully done!! I’m not a hand sewing person but have SO much respect and awe for those who do! Your work is wonderful!!
