Give-Away — Day 3

Welcome to Day 3!!!  I am allowing you to make one comment entry into this give-away each day, Monday Thru Friday this week.  Each day I’m describing a couple of items in the picture.  So far, we have the wristlet purse and the sea shell-styled ornament.

The pink spiral bound book is a lined notebook with flamingos on it.  Nope, I’ve never seen a flamingo down here, but we do see the Roseate Spoonbills.  Close enough!  Right below the notebook is a bar of peppermint exfoliating soap for your feet to get your tootsies “beach ready”!

Leave a comment on this post for an entry in the give-away, and you will have two more chances to enter:  Thursday & Friday!  “Drawing” by random number generator on Saturday.

Good Luck, and thanks to all of you for visiting!

Telephoto Tuesday

Here are two Texas bird pictures.  The pelicans always fascinate me:

And another favorite, a Northern Shoveler:

Give-Away…Day 2

I’m so glad you stopped by to Day 2 of my give-away.  My give-away is running Monday through Friday, 2/19/10.  Each day I will have a give-away post; leave a comment on that day’s give-away post for an entry in the drawing (which will take place Saturday).  You may enter once each day.  At the end of the day, I will close the comments on that day’s particular post.

Port Aransas, Texas, has lots of boutiques and shops around town, and I’ve been on the lookout for some beachy prizes for you.  I’ll tell you about a couple of items in the picture each day.

My most favorite thing is the wristlet purse in a sage-y green with gold accents.  I actually bought one of these in red for myself.  It’s a great little bag to grab when you’re going out to dinner or doing some shopping and don’t want to carry your heavy everyday bag.   love, love, love it!

Sitting on top of the bag is a shell-shaped ornament that would look great on a tree, in a window, or — lots of other places.

Leave a comment on this post for an entry in the drawing (one entry each day).  Good luck! And I’ll share a pelican picture to close off this post:

Design Wall Monday

A look at what I’ve done this past week, and what I’m working on.  Here is a close-up of one of the 28 Valentine’s Day cards I stitched up on Saturday.  Nothing fancy, to be sure, but I thought the fabric was adorable for an at-the-beach card.

Our “crafting group” (such a catchy name, don’t you think???) made these easy coasters from this tutorial.  They were a huge hit, and a fun easy way to use up some stash and have some gifts ready to give in the process!

I’m working on this Patricia B. Campbell Tree of Life 1 applique’d wall hanging.  Not much progress, I know.  I had a comment last week about perhaps not having enough contrast between the rocks and the background (although not many of the rocks are in place yet this week).  For better or for worse, this is intentional.  I am hoping the rocks look like they are coming forth from the “ground”.  We’ll see how it goes…I may end up changing fabrics out…I’ve been wrong before!

Socks:  I’m STILL working on the same sock as I’ve been working on for quite a few days now…ready to do the heel flap, so that’s always exciting!  It will start to really look like a sock.  No photo this week, toooooo boring!

Other News: I have a give-away starting today, so click here for the give-away posting. Your comment(s) MUST be on the give-away posting(s) to be included in the drawing, although I would love it if you commented here also — it just won’t be your entry in the drawing.

Give-Away!!! Day 1…

In celebration of the 100,000th visit to my blog, I thought a give-away would be in order.  In thinking about a theme, I thought since the whole country has had less than ideal weather this winter, it would be fun to take you all to the beach!  Well, that’s not quite in my budget, so one person will get a package containing some items from the beach town of Port Aransas, Texas.  There are lots of gift shops and fun places to explore in town, and here’s a selection that I’ve put together from my shopping forays:

Weekend Update — Sewing / Bird ID

QUILTING:   Judy L is having a Quiltathon this weekend.

We are staying in a condo in Texas where there are a lot of other Winter Texans seeking refuge from the winter weather of the north.  Every year we get a few valentines from friends, and I tell myself, I’m going to remember that next year and be ready to reciprocate.  Hah!  I forgot til today.

So I went to the little quilt shop we have in town (little is a lot better than none), found this cute fabric of children playing at the seashore.  I spent the rest of today (Saturday) making little “post card” valentines, but I called them “Candy-Grams” because I stapled a couple of pieces of salt-water taffy to each card.   They are very simply done, no fancy trims, not much quilting, no embellishments; I know I could have done something better.  Maybe next year?  Yeah, right.

Today, Sunday, I’ll get back to my overly ambitious applique project, but the valentines were a fun diversion.

BIRDS:  The birding center and Paradise Pond continue to offer surprises.  Last week the shrubs at the birding center were teeming with Yellow-Rumped Warblers:

Today at the birding center there was this tiny, quick bird who just wouldn’t sit still for a picture.  Didn’t he/she know that I do much better if the subject will actually sit still for two seconds — and five seconds would be really good?  I think this is a Ruby-crowned Kinglet:

Which brings me to my mystery bird from last week.  Could it be a young and/or female Ruby-crowned Kinglet?  This little bird had the same jumping-around behavior, was very tiny, plus I think they look similar.  The Ruby-crowned Kinglets do frequent this area, but I haven’t seen them before.

The coloring looks different, but these two pictures by the pond are of the same bird.  What do you think it is, any ideas?

Friday’s Photos

I’m behind on my favorite bird photos of the past week,  so bear with me…lots of birds today.  I’ll start big — a Cooper’s Hawk was lurking in a palm tree at the birding center:

Last week I saw a Least Grebe.  They are quite uncommon, but native to this area.  This week I saw a Pied-Billed Grebe.  The pied are more common, and a little bigger.  Their bill is also thicker with a stripe, while the Least Grebe has a quite narrow bill plus that distinctive golden eye.

The grebes spend nearly all their time in the water, rarely flying or on land.  They don’t walk well due to the location of their legs — far, far back on their bodies.  They are excellent divers.  As my nephew Bill pointed out the other day, when they were preening by stretching their necks out towards their tails, they are actually getting at an oil duct that’s by their tail.  It is parafin-like, and they use their head to distribute this oil onto their feathers, making them more water proof.

I thought it was interesting to see how high this Green-Winged Teal raised herself out of the water during her bathing process.

And as she settled back into the water, she gave us a nice peek at those beautiful green feathers:

I love this picture of this turtle.  The turtles are beyond abundant at Paradise Pond this year.  This Red-Eared Slider looks like he could come right out of the picture:

Well, I’ve bombarded you with enough pix for today.  I have some warbler pictures, including a mystery female I’ll ask for your help on, but I will save those for tomorrow.

Give-away starts Monday!

Wednesday’s Puzzle

There was a Green-Winged Teal on this bit of fallen reed, and this Northern Shoveler came along and took over this (apparently) prime piece of real estate.  I don’t often get to see the shovelers’ feet, and they are so nice and orange.  Here he is as a puzzle:

(I don’t know if I’ve used this cut before; it’s called “Crazy”.)

Telephoto Tuesday

Last week at the birding center, this cute little Least Grebe entertained me for a long time.  When I take bird photos, I always have my camera set to take multiple (up to four) exposures if I hold the shutter button down.  You never know what the birds are going to do when they are already in motion.  This little guy didn’t disappoint me.  You would never guess how long his neck is!

Enjoy whatever you’re doing today, and don’t forget to take time to s-t-r-e-t-c-h!

Design-Wall Monday

Oh, how I love Mondays when I have something to show!  I finished my apron.  Don’t love it, but don’t hate it either.  I’m going to make it again in a small print and a near-solid, and I think I will be much happier.  As Mary-Kay said, spots won’t show on this apron, so it will make a good “working apron”.

I’m at a waiting point on my at-the-beach skinny wall hanging.  I do love how this one is coming out.  It needs more embellishment and quilting, but I don’t have access to all my “stuff” right now.  Most of the “sky” is hidden because I had to wrap it around the railing and pin it.

I’m still working on my Crazy Zauberball socks.  This is the crazy yarn where there is no repeat in the striping pattern in the yarn, so your two socks are going to be different no matter what you do.  And mine are.  The yarn is wonderfully soft, and I’m guessing these socks are going to be favorites.  They will look great with denim.

And I started a new project.  This is an applique’d Patricia Campbell pattern, Tree of Life 1.  I started by doing a flower, but I need to work on the rocks and the tree trunk and branches.  What is most exciting to me is I’m using one of Vicki Welsh’s hand-dyed fabrics for my background (and also some FQs of hers for the tree itself).  I LOVE this piece of fabric.  To me it looks like a fiery sunset.  So you don’t think I’m getting myself in too deep for my second applique’ project?  Of course I am, but that seems to be what I do when I learn something new.  Okay, I can paint a stick man; now I think I will try to replicate the Cistene Chapel.

I just eye-balled laying out some of the pieces, so it isn’t quite right; just wanted to give you an idea of what I’m doing.

And I’m missing some of the rocks on the left-hand side, but I’m still debating on those fabrics.

And, guess what?  I passed 100,000 visits sometime in the night last night, so I’m going to have a give-away later this week!  The theme of the give-away is “At the Beach”, so be sure to check back.

Wondering what other quilters are working on?  Pop on over to  Judy Laquidara’s blog.  And thank you, Judy, for hosting Design Mondays.  It’s a lot of fun, and a it encourages us to take stock once a week of our progress.

And a thank you to Vicki for her wonderful hand-dyed fabrics.  To visit her shop, click here.
