Sue’s Favorite Things Give-away – Friday

Wow, it’s Friday already!  We’ve had a typical spring week here in the Midwest — cloudy, rainy, starts to clear, rains some more.  Great for all of nature, and disastrous for my sinuses and my aching wrist!  When we’re in Texas for a time in the winters, we are on the Gulf of Mexico.  The breezes — no, let’s be honest — the winds generally blow in from the Gulf.  The air must be pretty clean because my sinuses don’t bother me at all down there.

Well, I almost went to bed tonight without doing this post.  I nearly forgot!  This give-away has been good for me.  I learned how to prepare my post earlier in the day and schedule it to be published automatically at a specified time (midnight!).  I still have to go on at midnight and close the comments to the previous post, but that only takes a minute.  It has all been working fine, as long as I remember to prepare!

Today’s sur-prize (and sorry, but I don’t have a Wheel of Fortune budget, so no fabulous prizes) is a large spool of Gutermann thread and a regular spool of Mettler thread, both in a light tan (added to the previous semi-fabulous prizes of:  Clover fork pins, Best Press starch substitute, cookies, tea, placemat bag, and a yard of the Fruit Ladies stripe).

giveawayfriday

Even though I only started quilting in 2000, I’ve sewn since I was 12 or so, and there has never really been a time since then that I wasn’t sewing something — clothes for myself, my wedding dress, my sister’s wedding dress, pajamas and tee shirts for the boys, slipcovers, draperies, drapery toppers — so I have had a lot of thread.  And I used some of that thread for piecing.  All of a sudden this winter, I started running out.  I ran out of white, then I ran out of tan, I ran out of gray (somehow I seem to have plenty of purple).  I had to go BUY thread!!!  So the two winners will get some thread to add to their thread reserves, so hopefully you don’t have to scrounge around for just a little more tan thread to continue sewing!

The fine print:  1.  Give-away runs Sunday 4/26 through Sunday 5/3.  2.  You may enter once each day by posting a comment on that day’s new give-away posting (that’s what THIS is).  3.  Each day I will add an item to each ”basket” (there will be two); to have the most entries in the drawing, check back and add a comment each day.  4.  There are two baskets because there will be two names drawn on Monday May 4th.  5.  Be sure to include your e-mail when you make your comment so I can contact you if you are one of the winners!  6.  I will close the comments on this post at midnight CDT (sorry, West Coast, but that’s the latest I can stay awake).  Also at midnight CDT the next day’s give-away post will come up, so if the comments are closed here, go to www.suehecker.com/blog (unless it is after May 3rd — then you’re too late!).

And it’s Friday, you’ve worked hard all week, and I’m tired and need to go to bed!  So just leave me a comment to this post for an entry in the drawing.  There’s no additional subject matter tonight, but I’ll have to think of something for tomorrow because it’s really made reading the comments a lot of fun.  Two more prize days to go.  Good Luck!!!

Sue

SORRY, THE GIVE-AWAY IS OVER.

thread is a great prize! Had to think back how young I was when I starting sewing. I know I started quilting about age 11, and was probably sewing before that. I made lots of my clothes for school (pre jean era!) when I was grades 6-7-8.

  2. Donna says:

I agree with Lori….thread *is* a great prize! Where would we all be without it?!!

I’ve been sewing since grade school, too. 4-H contests, pants and jackets with long legs and sleeves (!!), my wedding dress….all such great memories. Seems to be cheaper now, tho, to buy clothes, eh?!!

  3. pdudgeon says:

my mother was a great sewer and made most all my clothes up until i enterd Jr High. we took home ec for a year in 7th grade; 6 months of sewing and 6 months of cooking. My mom was great at both, of course, but i was sadly inexperienced and had to learn all the simple things.
I did do some sewing in high school, but didn’t really get into it until i had kids and started making clothes for them! And yes, i still do sew garments as well as quilts.

and yes, thread is a basic essential and a great part of the give away!

  4. Cathy says:

I love thread, it’s a great prize. It’s like candy, you want them all when your in the store. (smile) I have sewn and been crafty all my life too. I think I started sewing when I was about 7 when my Dad got me my first sewing machine (I still have it!). Started Quilting in 1999 I think.

  5. Tracy says:

Hmmmm…I guess I’ll have to try different threads someday. I didn’t know there was that much of a difference. And I could probably list every sewing project I’ve ever done (on a small piece of paper) so I’m definitely still a rookie :)

  6. Jamie says:

I need all the thread I can get hehehehe.

  7. Glenda in Florida says:

I’ve been sewing since I took my first sewing project in 4-H in 5th grade. I’m mostly into quilting now, but can be enticed to sew some clothes for the grandkids every once in a while now. As for allergies–I’m allergic to things in Illinois where I grew up, but they don’t bother me much here in Florida. I think long term exposure made it worse, and after only one day back in the mid west, I’m reaching for the allergy pills.

  8. Marilyn says:

I finally fixed my website, didn’t realize until yesterday that I had typed it wrong :)

I started sewing back in Jr. High. I remember making a pair of shorts. I sewed the legs together about 10 times before finally figuring out how to unfold and refold the right way to sew them together. I was so frustrated with those shorts.

I made boxers for my husband for years when we first got married to save money, now they are cheaper to buy :( And who has time for sewing clothes? There are way too many quilts to make!

  9. Kerry says:

The “fabulous prizes” phrase is SO yesterday. You should use “crack-a-lackin’ prizes!” to really set off these cute and fun little bags! And thread is totally CRACK-A-LACKIN! (can you tell what phrase we like in this house?) (This is Sue: I just have to add a comment to Kerry’s comment. I always tell DH I don’t want any presents for my birthday — I want Fabulous Prizes. I shudder to think of what I might get if I asked for something Crack-a-Lackin! –Sue)

  10. Judy says:

Sue, this has been a very fun week! Thank you!!! I think your prize bags are FAAAB U LOUS! And thread is a very good addition. :-)

Yip, allergy season is in full swing in the Pacific Northwest–I am so lucky to only have minor ones.
Time for me to get crack-a-lackin’ (a favorite phrase in our house too) and get this quilt off the frame.

Thanks again for a very fun week.

  11. Betty says:

Can always use a good tan/beige thread…the goodies just keep jumping in the bags! I have always sewed clothes…mine, then my wedding suit and both bridesmaids’ dresses, then my children’s clothes and all the prom dresses! Said I would not sew my daughter’s wedding dress because I wanted to enjoy the time before! Didn’t start quilting until 2000 though … and haven’t slowed down since!

  12. Carol Smith says:

Your post brought back fond memories of learning to sew, I learned to sew watching my Mom and she worked with me. I still have my little Singer sewing machine – it is 50 years old! My favorite story is when my art teacher was trying to impress her boyfriend and he wanted her to take a sewing class. She was a fabulous artist but not so much a seamstress. During art I would go to the Home Economics class and sew her school project, then she would complete my art project – needless to say, I got an A in Art that year.

  13. Ruby says:

You can never have enough thread! Thank you so much for making this week fun with your giveaway, I’ve been waking up every morning to see what you have added and what the ? of the day is. I’ve learned a lot this week.

  14. Eileen Hubb says:

Glad to hear you didn’t quilt for a lot of years, maybe there is hope for me yet. Join the other “arm breakers” in hurting with this cold wet weather. Looking forward to sunshine.I can always use thread, seems like a person has a lot and all of a sudden there isn’t any. It has been fun looking everyday to see what is new on your site. Love the fruit ladies!!!!

  15. floribunda says:

I missed posting yesterday, but I’ll just mention that I love photographing the birds around my house but you do a better job of it! I’m always trying to “shoot” through screens or double-paned windows and it doesn’t work well… and I love the fruit-ladies!

  16. ginny says:

Had an early interest in sewing. My mother tried to teach me but she had little time to spare with taking care of ten children. Took my first sewing class when I was a senior in high school. I love it and have continued thru the years….lots of years.

  17. Candice says:

I, too, have been sewing since I was very young–I remember hand-sewing and embroidering a little wraparound skirt for my Tammy doll (a cheaper, less buxom version of Barbie) when I was eight or so. My Mom started seriously quilting after she retired (twenty-five years ago), and I really only started five years ago, although for some reason I was the sibling picked to put together the quilt for our parents’ fortieth anniversary in 1985. Each sibling (I have eight) and grandchild (there were six or eight then)contributed any kind of block, and I put them together with a green print sashing. I really didn’t know much about quilting then, and used a high loft batting and TIED it. It actually looked pretty good, and resides to this day on the guest bed at Mom’s house in Madison, WI. I don’t look too closely at it when I visit. It’s the thought that counts, right? Sue, everybody always needs thread, so I think that’s a great addition to the bags. And it looks like you started a topic without even trying. I loved reading about when people started sewing.

  18. Karen L says:

Sue, What a great giveaway you are having………a bunch of great useful items……Sure hope I win.

when did I start sewing……..age 11 or 12……started in Home Ec (back when home ec was all girls they they offered it every year) and I sewing a project or two every year for 4-H, made my prom dresses and evenwear for later on in life, I’ve done draperies and window treatments, bridesmaid dresses, dresses for my daughter….and my first quilt made in 1983…..that’s 26 years having alot of fun.

    Thanks for doing this giveaway.

  19. Robin says:

I think that’s funny because the other day as I was getting ready to sew on my binding- I realized that I didn’t have the thread color to match and I have no place close by to buy any thread- luckily I found a bobbin with lavender thread that I could use. We can always use thread!!!!
