Blogiversary Give-Away — Starts TODAY

SORRY, THE GIVE-AWAY IS OVER.

Although I’ve had my web site for three years or so, last week was my one-year anniversary blogging.  And what a fun year it’s been!  I’ve met some wonderful people on line, made some quilts through Judy Laquidara’s site with many of you, and have enjoyed your blogs as well.   I’ve also enjoyed many, many e-mail comments sent by non-bloggers.  A big THANK YOU to all of you!

Last week I also surpassed 40,000 “hits” on my site, which is amazing to me.  I know some of them are robots and spammers, doing what they do, but that still leaves a lot of friendly hits.  Thank you for making this fun for me!

It’s a DOUBLE GIVE-AWAY!  (I feel like an infomercial — “wait, there’s more!”). And there IS more!   I will reveal one item being given away each day starting today through next Sunday, May 3rd, for a total of eight surprises in each gift basket.  Some surprises will be smaller, some will be larger.

Check back each day for you can enter in the drawing one time per day!  (You can only win once — if the same name is drawn twice, I will move on and draw again so we have two winners.)  The theme for this basket is Sue’s Favorite Things.  In looking for items to include, I would wonder, gee, would people want that?  What if they already have it?  Then I decided, who cares?  I’m buying MY favorite things to give away.  Don’t we all do that when selecting a gift?

Here is today’s surprise: a package of fork pins.  These are great for pinning those nesting intersections together; you get less distortion and shifting of the fabrics.

Leave me a comment telling a little bit about your first quilt and/or how you were introduced to quilting.  I will accept comments left on this post before 2:00 a.m. CST, to accomodate the west coast.  Subsequent days there will be a NEW POST on which to leave a comment for that day.  Go to www.suehecker.com/blog and it will bring you to the current day’s post, not back to this post, on future days this week.

Good Luck!

Sue

PS:   Although everyone has included their e-mail address to me so far, I should  add a reminder here to enter your e-mail address where prompted so I have a means of contacting the lucky winners.  Your e-mail is not visible on the comments, only to me when I log in.

SORRY, THE GIVE-AWAY IS OVER.

My first quilt was for my sister’s wedding – I had everyone in the wedding party draw on a square, then bought the book from Fons & Porter (?) that basically told you how to quilt. It ended up being queen size!

PS: If I happen to win this prize pack, do I get instructions that actually explain what these things do and how to use them??? :)

Hmm – how did I get into quilting? I belong to a sailing club. One member would be hand quilting on days she was not sailing. Since there were so many people asking her about quilting, she held a class at the club. The first quilt project was a sailboat quilt! I used Christmas colors and made a wall hanging for my parents. Remember the carol “I saw three ships coming sailing by on Christmas Day”?

By the way, we had other quilting events at the club – sometimes there was more talking and eating than quilting! None of the guys joined us in the quilting, but they were always there to make comments as well as join in the eating!

There was always fabric in my mom’s house, but my mom didn’t quilt. I started a quilt when I was 18, but never finished one until I was 20. My first finished quilt was a nine patch that I gave to my grandma.

    Happy blogiversary!

gosh those pins look interesting! i’e heard of them but never used them before.
I first got started in quilting during the Bicentenial(1976)when quilting (and everything colonial)experienced a revival. I made a crib quilt for a cousin’s son and hand quilted it on a home made quilting frame.

  6. Ruby says:

I started quilting in the late seventies, my grandmother was a quilter and my inspiration!

  7. Donna says:

I made my first quilt in the mid-70′s….a charm quilt from leftover clothing fabrics, curtains, etc. Osnaburg (sp?!) backing, turned over to the front. Didn’t know about binding then! It’s faded and ravelling, but it’s a treasure.
    Thanks for your give-away!!

What a generous blogiversary celebration! I was introduced to quilting by my Great-Grandmother. She did not teach me but I remember watching her and I still have the one quilt that she made for me. My Mom and I are still working to complete all of her UFOs!

  9. Glenda in Florida says:

I started my first quilt in 1984. I signed up for a quilting class to celebrate my slightly delayed college graduation. It is a lovely king sized UFO, awaiting hand quilting in the two very wide borders. And, it wouldn’t fit any bed in my home if it were finished. I have managed to complete many other quilts since then, but that first one…

  10. Carol Smith says:

My first quilt I made at your house, you taught me, Mary, and Joyce how to make a star quilt. I have still not finished it (probably need another class).

You have inspired me to quilt even more, have made several baby quilts and then got the quitling machine which you showed me how to work and not to be afraid to use it.

So thanks for always being so patient and all your words of encouragement.

  11. Robin says:

Gee- my first quilt-Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Would it be the stanped cross stitch pre quilted baby quilt that I made when my daughter was born or would it be the pack of pre cut blocks that got turned into a quilt when my son was born? Do those count? My first pieced quilt started as a Joanns BOM which I bought the first year they came out and finished 3 years ago ( 10 years later) and have been playing around with quilts since then.

  12. Judy says:

I’ve been going to buy myself some of those pins, I’ve heard great things about them. My first quilt was a baby quilt for my newborn cousin in 1965–I was 10. My Gramma helped me sew some flannel scraps together and we used yarn ties. I don’t even remember what it looked like, I just remember being with Gramma.

  13. Dave says:

I dont have any use for pins, but I can always use more forks.. All mine seem to dirty again.

Very funny, Dave. Sorry, immediate members of this blogger’s family are not eligible for this give-away. Now go do your dishes. Love you. Mom

  14. Arlene says:

My first quilt? Well, that would have been 1976 for my first child, (born that year). A very nice woman of about 80 years young taught me how to quilt. I visited here every 2 weeks and completed my baby quilt just in time. My daughter still has that quilt!
