Working on my PhD’s

Projects half Done, that is.  I finally got back to Judy L’s Star BOM blocks, and here are blocks 11 and 12 (only ONE MORE BLOCK to go!!!):

This morning, Judy posted her layout plan for the Stash Quilt she’s shared.  (And if you’re not sure you have time for this quilt, it took me two hours to stitch up the 28 blocks, including pressing.)  All my blocks are made out of stash, and, even better — leftovers from another quilt, hiding in a bag!  Here is the layout for my blocks (may do some more tweaking):

This morning Judy posted the fabric requirements for the setting triangles and borders.  I was determined to only pull from stash, I did’t care if nothing “works”, this is truly going to be a STASH Quilt.  I pulled a bunch of fabric off my shelves and brought it up to audition it next to the blocks.  I’ve had this rosy paisley fabric (really crappy fabric, kind of stiff, had it forever and it just doesn’t seem to go away).  It looks pretty good with these blocks!  I have 7 or so yards of this fabric, so I’m going to use it for the setting triangles as well as the outer border; then use the rest up in the backing.  For the first border, I’m going to use this brownish gold (or goldish brown), which is actually a very pretty fabric:

I’m really liking how my “Judy Projects” are coming together.  Later this week I will get back to the Bears in the Farmhouse quilt, now that I’ve decided on a sashing fabric.  I’m loving that one too!  Then I have to get back to some “Sue Projects”!!!

Judy L’s Stash Quilt

Judy L at Patchwork Times has another quilt pattern she’s sharing.  This is getting dangerous — her projects are overlapping!!!  And for just that reason, I was going to pass on this one.  It’s a simple quilt (so we’ve been told) that we can pull the fabric for from stash.  Sounded fun, but I just have too much going on.  Then I started seeing some of the finished blocks.  Dang!  I could do that!  They’re easy-peasy blocks, although she hasn’t shared how they go together yet, and that may involve more work.

When I saw someone’s completed blocks, a dim little light went on in my head.  Three years ago I made an ecru and red quilt, and I knew there was a bag with partial FQs of shades of coffee with varying amounts of cream.    My quilt will be less scrappy with ecrus for the lights, and dark reds, blues and browns for the darks.

I cut out all the lights and darks; the dark sets with one light patch are above.  I also made one block, just to make sure the pieces come out and I didn’t make some major boo-boo.

This is the kind of stash it’s particularly smart to bust — leftovers from another project hiding in a bag!  I’m glad I decided to jump in on this one.  It won’t take long at all to stitch up these cute little blocks, and then we’ll see what Judy has in store for us next!

Meet the Fruit Ladies

fruitladiesquilt0003

I found this Fruit Ladies fabric last spring/summer, and it just made me laugh.  I guess some people find it offensive, but, maybe because I identify with the “apple-bottomed” ladies, this fabric tickled me.  I had quite a number of FQs of fruit fabric, so I put together a plan — baskets of fruit, no-applique style!  The fruit is cut into 8″ squares (four from a FQ).  I did some 4-Patch Posy type of blocks with the Fruit Ladies overall print, and I inserted  a few of those into a few of the fruit squares.

Then I found the stripe on another shopping trip.  I hadn’t planned on a border, but who could resist?  This is going to be an in-the-trunk quilt for picnics, trips to the beach, etc., so it will get some kind of meander or all-over treatment for quilting.  Nothing fancy, but it makes me smile every time I pull it out to work on it!

Stash-Busting Report, Week 9

I ended last week at 7.25 yards OVER for 2009 thus far.   This was a good week, making a back for a quilt, adding a border to another, replacing some blocks in a partially completed top, cutting out the remaining blocks for our guild top, and cutting out blocks 11 and 12 for Judy L’s Star BOM.  I bought six charm packs (on sale for 3.95 each!!!) to add back into my stash, and 5 yards for another backing that got made right away.  (I know, too much detail.)

This week…

  • 19.5 yards out (21.5 out previously) for a total YTD 41 yds out
  • 7.75 yards in (28.75 in previously) for a total YTD of 36.5 yds in
  • Week 9 Net:  11.75 yards busted
  • YTD Net:  4.5 yards busted
  • Goal is 75 yards out, so 70.5 yards to go!!!
  • By far, my best week.

PhD List (Projects half done) for March:

  • Pat & Patrick’s Irish Chain (still working on the pieced borders)
  • Challenge Quilt — working on the flying geese
  • Quilt & Bind Judy L’s Labor Day Challenge
  • Quilt Renee’s quilt
  • One more apron!  (three down, seven to go)
  • Quilt & Bind Fruit Ladies Quilt
  • Quilt & Bind Moda Posh Quilt
  • I got all enthusiastic over the Church Ladies apron pattern by Mary Mulari, and cut out TEN of them.  Each apron takes two 1-yard cuts of coordinating fabric, as the apron is reversible.  They are so functional, and a step back in time.  Here is the latest completed one (#3):

Exercise Plan:  Using the elliptical machine ALMOST daily, increased my time up to 14 minutes.  I am taking Sundays off, took my birthday off, and took yesterday off, so today will be a make-up day.  One of my on-line friends volunteered to be my accountability buddy, and so we report our exercise results to each other daily.  What a gift!  I find I’m more conscientious about exercising when I know someone else will know!  Thank you, Vicki!

Yesterday a couple of my very best buds took me to a local casino for a birthday breakfast and a little time doing our part to stimulate the economy.  They had special attire for me to wear, so the whole world could share in the wonder of what a 60-year-old looks like.    It isn’t pretty, the lighting is awful, but here we are.  Carol is on the left, Marcia on the right, and I guess that leaves me in the middle:

I usually celebrate my birthday the whole month of February, but with DH’s surgery and mending time, it hasn’t been all about ME this month!  So my “birthday month” will be extending into March this year.  We didn’t get together with the boys & Lynn because of a big snow storm on my birthday, and our BIG girls’ outing will be later when Pat is back from Texas (on the road today as we speak).  (And quit snickering, you men — “big” refers to the outing, not the girls!!)

I like Nephew Doug’s take on all the snow on my birthday — it was extra icing for my cake!  Thank you, Doug, you always find a positive note.
